Which Toothbrush Should You Choose for Oral Health?

It might not be a question as old as time, but when it comes to whether or not patients should be using a toothbrush with hard or soft bristles, it’s certainly one we hear often. So, what’s the answer? Here’s how it breaks down!

Picking Your Toothbrush

Opting for a hard-bristled toothbrush can give your teeth a superior scrub, so that must mean it will clean your mouth better, right? Wrong. A toothbrush that has very hard bristles can actually do more harm than good when it comes to your teeth and gums, leading to irritation. In fact, according to the Wall Street Journal, as many as 20% of people have damaged their teeth by over-brushing. Add to that a toothpaste filled with abrasive particles for a deeper clean, and you could have quite an unhappy mouth. Simply put, choose a soft-bristled brush.

If you have particularly sensitive teeth or are experiencing signs of enamel erosion or gum disease, an extra-soft toothbrush may be an even better option for your mouth.
