Root Canal Treatment in Pennant Hills

“I have a damaged tooth... Now what?”

Living with a decayed, severely damaged, or infected tooth can feel like an endless cycle of pain, discomfort, and shame. It makes eating and drinking difficult, causes constant irritation, and it can make you embarrassed to show your smile.

Not only is this situation beyond uncomfortable, but allowing it to go on untreated can actually cause further harm to your health.

A tooth that has been thoroughly damaged or that has undergone a significant amount of decay is at high risk for infection. Without immediate treatment, dental pulp from an infected tooth can spread to other teeth. This can lead to:

  • Infections in multiple teeth
  • Extensive tooth loss
  • A decrease in overall mouth function and oral health

If you have a tooth that is at risk of infection or that has already become infected, you shouldn’t wait to have the tooth repaired or the infection removed. That’s why we recommend a root canal treatment.

If you live in Pennant Hills and suffer from these symptoms, you may be a candidate for a root canal Pennant Hills treatment.

Types of Root Canal Treatments

You may be confused about the type of treatment you need. Our team of dentists will walk you through your options, but just to give you an idea, here are three types of treatment options:

  • Apicoectomy: A procedure removing infected tissue from a tooth as well as the tip of its root.
  • Pulpotomy: A procedure removing the nerve and diseased pulp from the tooth’s crown, leaving its root nerve untouched.
  • Pulpectomy: A procedure removing the diseased pulp from the crown of the tooth as well as the root.

Do I Need to Get a Root Canal Treatment?

Unfortunately, over the years, root canal treatment has become clouded in an aura of skepticism and fear. People are worried that the root canal treatment will be very painful, and there are widespread misconceptions about whether or not the treatment is actually beneficial.

At Hills Dental Design, we are committed to promoting the understanding that root canal treatment is a comfortable, safe, and sometimes even necessary procedure.

While our primary goal is to eliminate the risk of infection, we also aim to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. This approach helps to:

  • Uphold the strength of your teeth
  • Maintain the integrity of your jaw structure
  • Promote bone stimulation

Our qualified endodontists are also dedicated to ensuring that our patients have the most comfortable and painless experience possible. After undergoing root canal treatment, patients can expect the following benefits:

  • Eliminated risk of infection or abscess
  • Improved oral health in general
  • Mouth function returned to normal
  • Restored sense of self-confidence

The Root Canal Treatment Process and What to Expect

Your First Appointment

Before beginning the procedure, the area surrounding the affected tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic. This will help eliminate pain and discomfort, consequently helping you relax.

Once the patient is no longer able to feel sensation in the affected area, an access cavity will be created in the tooth with a dental handpiece. Now that the endodontist can see the inside of the tooth, they will clear away any debris from the area, remove the infected dental pulp, and flush away any bacteria.

The empty dental cavity can then be thoroughly cleaned to keep the area fresh and prevent any further infection. The gap will be filled with a temporary filling until the time of the next appointment. In the meantime, the permanent crown will be prepared.

Your Second Appointment

When the permanent crown is ready, you will come back for a second appointment to have the temporary filling removed. At this point, once the endodontist has verified that the infection has fully cleared, they will fill in the gap and install the permanent crown.

And that’s all! Your root canal treatment is complete!

Root Canal Aftercare

After your second appointment, it is very unlikely that the tooth that has undergone root canal treatment will become reinfected. Furthermore, the treatment will have had a strengthening effect on the surrounding teeth, leading to a general improvement in oral health.

The crown does need time to settle in the mouth, so it is important in the period of time after your procedure to treat the tooth gently and reduce any unnecessary stress to the area.

Here are some general guidelines to follow after your procedure:

  • Refrain from biting down on the affected tooth until it has settled
  • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles
  • Avoid brushing around the crown if it is too painful
  • Eat softer food that won’t put too much stress on the tooth

In addition to these, be sure to attend any follow-up appointments that your endodontist recommends in order to maintain the health of your root canal.

Frequency Asked Questions About Root Canal

Root canal treatment is often perceived as a horribly painful experience. However, with the aid of modern medicine and advanced pain management techniques, a root canal is usually no more painful than getting a filling.

This depends on the insurance that you have, but most dental insurance plans will pay for at least half of the procedure if not more. Your dentist can assist you in determining exactly what your insurance will cover.
