Do Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?

Cosmetic dentistry isn’t just for appearance’s sake. Dentists also make sure your teeth are cavity-free before applying any restorations. Veneers, for instance, are well-suited for covering up imperfections on the front teeth. But how do these restorations affect your teeth in the long run?

How are Veneers Applied?

The first step in getting veneers is undergoing a thorough dental examination. Your dentist will check the scope of your dental problem and determine whether veneers are the right solution for you. Afterwards, your tooth will be checked and cleaned from decay and cavities. The dentist will take an impression of your tooth which will be used to mould the veneer to its exact shape, size, and colour.

It may take a few weeks to finish the application of veneers because these prosthetics are custom-made in a dental laboratory. Once they are done, your dentist will prep your tooth for the application. Approximately half a millimetre will be trimmed off your tooth enamel. This will give enough space for the veneer to bond perfectly onto your tooth surface.

Benefits of Getting Veneers

Veneers can be used to fix different dental problems, including:

  1. Cracked teeth. Veneers work perfectly for dental emergencies where teeth accidentally get cracked, chipped, or broken.
  2. Unevenly shaped teeth. If you have one tooth with an odd shape from the rest of your teeth, it can easily be covered with a veneer. People won’t notice the difference between your natural teeth and the veneer.
  3. Discoloured teeth. A tooth that underwent root canal treatment may start to change colour over time. Veneers are effective for covering individual discoloured teeth.
  4. Gapped teeth. Veneers can cover gaps between teeth without looking noticeable or needing extensive preparation like other prosthetics.
  5. Worn-down teeth. For teeth that have worn down over time, veneers can serve as an aesthetic restoration and additional protection.

Are Veneers Bad for the Teeth?

The short answer is no. Veneers are not bad for the teeth. These restorations are made of biocompatible materials that can last a lifetime. They do not cause discolouration, decay, or deterioration of the natural tooth. That said, here are some important reminders about getting veneers:

  • Porcelain veneers are permanent. They can’t be removed anymore once they have been bonded to the tooth. You should only get veneers if you are looking for a permanent solution.
  • Teeth whitening doesn’t work on veneers. Since they are not natural, the teeth whitening treatment won’t work on them. If you wish to get whiter teeth, it’s best to undergo teeth whitening first before veneers so that your customised restorations will be made to match your teeth’s lighter colour.
  • Some patients experience throbbing pain right after getting veneers. This is normal since a layer of enamel was trimmed off to accommodate the restoration. The discomfort should be manageable with over-the-counter painkillers. It should also subside after a few days.
  • Dental hygiene is a must. Getting restorations doesn’t give you a free pass to ignore your teeth. It should be the other way around. After getting veneers or any other kind of restoration, you should be more careful with your dental health. You can avoid further problems and prolong the lifespan of your restorations through proper dental hygiene.
